Neuroimaging of meditation’s e¡ect on brain reactivity to pain
نویسندگان
چکیده
Some meditation techniques reduce pain, but there have been no studies on howmeditation a¡ects the brain’s response to pain. Functional magnetic resonance imaging of the response to thermally induced pain applied outside the meditation period found that long-term practitioners of the Transcendental Meditation technique showed 40^50% fewer voxels responding to pain in the thalamus and total brain than in healthy matched controls interested in learning the technique. After the controls learned the technique andpracticedit for 5months, their response decreased by 40^50% in the thalamus, prefrontal cortex, total brain, and marginally in the anterior cingulate cortex. The results suggest that the Transcendental Meditation technique longitudinally reduces the a¡ective/motivational dimension of the brain’s response to pain. Excessive testing in emergent evaluation of children with first unprovoked seizure
Abstract Backround: The first episode of an afebrile seizure is a common cause of admission of children to emergency departments. Alot of tests are routinely performed for these patients. The cost of such an evaluation is high and benefits are doubtful. We conducted this study in order to evaluate the results of the tests and find out what tests are necessary for children with first unp...
متن کاملIranian Brain Imaging Database: A Neuropsychiatric Database of Healthy Brain
Introduction: The Iranian Brain Imaging Database (IBID) was initiated in 2017, with 5 major goals: provide researchers easy access to a neuroimaging database, provide normative quantitative measures of the brain for clinical research purposes, study the aging profile of the brain, examine the association of brain structure and function, and join the ENIGMA consortium. Many prestigious databases...
متن کاملSelf-Injury in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disability: Exploring the Role of Reactivity to Pain and Sensory Input
This paper provides information about the prevalence and topography of self-injurious behavior in children and adults with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability. Dominant models regarding the etiology of self-injury in this population are reviewed, with a focus on the role of reactivity to pain and sensory input. Neuroimaging studies are presented and suggestions are offered for ...
متن کاملLinking Brain Biology to Intellectual Endowment: A Review on the Associations of Human Intelligence With Neuroimaging Data
Human intelligence has always been a fascinating subject for scientists. Since the inception of Spearman’s general intelligence in the early 1900s, there has been significant progress towards characterizing different aspects of intelligence and its relationship with structural and functional features of the brain. In recent years, the invention of sophisticated brain imaging devices using Diffu...
متن کاملEmpathic neural reactivity to noxious stimuli delivered to body parts and non-corporeal objects.
Neuroimaging studies report that the experience of observing or imagining the pain of others is mapped on a set of neural structures that largely overlap those called into play during the personal experience of pain (the so-called pain matrix). Empathy for pain is a multifaceted process that may be triggered by higher-order variables (such as imagination of others' suffering) or by the direct v...
